Why Can't She Remember That?

This week's article deals with the complications that can arise in response to language boundaries. I thought the article was well written. It was interesting to see how the kids comprehend things differently. It was also interesting to me when I thought about people who spoke other languages. One of the first things I would ask when I was younger was "do you think in Spanish?" or whatever language they were speaking. It seemed to me to be that the reason "She can't remember that" is because she may remember differently in her own language.

  1. Since we have discussed this article in class, you now realize that the child asks this question because the teacher asks the same question of the students every time she reads this book to them. The child does not understand the routine in reading aloud to the children. Because of this, Meier suggests several ways teachers can let children know the reading routine. That relates to telling them explicitly what the read aloud rules are (Delpit's Rule 4).

  2. I agree with Dan. I found this article very interesting because I can relate myself to the article since I speak another language. I personally think in Portuguese at times when I want to speak English. Everything is different when you are trying to comprehend a story in another language. The teacher wants to make sure that the student understands what is going on.
